Second day of the satellite...

Carol Kuhlthau held the conference key note on Friday morning. The presenter congratulated Kulhtau for a good turnout, considering that it was the morning after the conference dinner. The subject was more or less the same as in the lecture she held on Monday: guided inquiry as a possible method to promote the learning in the framework of ISP. For me personally it's became clear that ISP is actually a learning model. It is clear that when ever an individual is seeking information, the goal is to find out something, a need to gather information - the goal is always to learn. Therefore it is quite simple: information seeking and learning do go hand in hand. It is also important to bare in mind that the process of learning is always hard and needs a lot of work. And to realize that the difficulties will come, it should ne easier to take up the challenge.

In the afternoon Eero Sormunen and Heidi Eriksson presented a project that is going on in Tampere region until the end of 2012. Tieto haltuun (mastering information) project started as establishing school library functions to upper secondary schools in Tampere. The project has evolved into putting information literacy issues to the curriculum. This is a project worth following. With great interest I will be following how these issues will be implemented in subject and course level.

They also presented findings related to this same project, about collaborative writing. Their paper is also in the conference proceedings. Two subject classes, finnish literature and history, did a wikipedia project and the study investigated collaborative source-based writing. The findings has been interesting and the research group is presenting the study in a months time in ISIC, Tokyo.

The conference was well organized, with an interesting program. It was nice to take part and make new friends and establish new connections. A visit to Tampere was very much worth the effort!
